Are you delegating?

“I let go of control, and really great things have happened that I could not have done myself.”

This statement was recently shared with me by a client who started delegating responsibility and trusting the team. There was always a reason not to delegate during our discussions until I challenged him to pick just one item on his list and start with that. Not long after that, first letting go and delegating, he saw the possibilities, the delegation level grew – and his team’s productivity, communication, and trust grew. This is a giant shift for this individual, who now understands that he does not have to do it all.

Here are some of the common reasons I hear against delegating. Ask yourself if you also use these.

-       I would be giving up control and ownership.

-       I’m not sure anyone else can do it (or as well as I can).

-       I want to do it (or I like doing it).

-       It is quicker if I do it myself.

-       I do not have the time to teach someone else how to do it.

-       I do not make the time or space to consider delegating.

Next time you think this way, consider what becomes possible once you start delegating more often.

-       Trust in others and within the team.

-       Growth opportunities.

-       Clearer communication.

-       Culture of collaboration and shared responsibility.

-       Efficiency and productivity increase.

-       Ownership of your own time.

Here is my recommendation to start delegating. Consider starting with just one item on your list today. Who do you trust on your team to give it to? Have a conversation with them to ensure they understand your expectations for the item. Consider letting them know you have confidence and trust in their ability to take this on. Be available if questions or concerns come up, but do not micro-manage.

It is challenging to change a habit. As you learn to delegate more, you will find a more improved use of your time and many other areas of growth within your team.
