Master the Art of Active Listening

Are you an active listener?

Here are a couple of things to think about as you answer this. Do you listen intending to react or speak as soon as possible, or are you the type that generally can relate to the speaker’s emotions? What about paying attention deeply with full attention? These are some areas to consider when developing your active listening skills.

Here are a few tips to work on to develop your active listening skills.

  1. Fight the urge to listen for a break so you may jump in with your point. When you hold off on the need to make a point and instead provide your full attention to the speaker, you can process the words and comprehend the message. You will get a deeper understanding and comprehension, allowing you to respond more effectively.

  2. Reduce distractions such as working on a project or being on a device or computer. Be present so the complete message is received.

  3. Focus on the message and not the delivery. It can be normal for many to judge others, take the time to recognize when you are doing this, and work to shift so you are only concerned with the message.

  4. Ask questions to clarify and ensure you understand the speaker accurately.

Working to develop these areas can lead to deeper understanding, trust, empathy, and deeper connections with the individuals around you. It can also lead to an environment of open communication that is more authentic. This all takes practice and dedication.
